Kudos to Donna Tracy for her letter, “Adelson should use money for good.” It sickens me when I see huge amounts of money being given to candidates running for president, most of whom are rich to begin with. If only Mr. Adelson and other millionaires would make an appearance at the soup kitchens where veterans, little old ladies and families with children come every day just to stay alive.
I donate and help at a church on Maryland Parkway, and my heart goes out to those wonderful people. One elderly lady was ecstatic because she finally got a small apartment and won’t have to sleep on the street. She always has a smile, but my heart aches for her and others.
Just think what $10 million would do for those poor souls. Where is the compassion for these wonderful, noncomplaining folks who are so down and out? Come on, you rich and those not-so-rich, and start helping the people who really need your help. When you look in your refrigerator and see it loaded with food and your home as well as your bed is warm and you feel safe, think of these poor souls sleeping in doorways and alleys. They are vulnerable. Let’s put our money where it will really do good. Remember the old saying, “There but for the grace of God go I.”

I very much concur with Carmine DiFazio's above commentary. However, Beverly, I know that your letter is well intended, but look at the Vermillion and Sisolak fiasco and all the monies that were unjustly taken and rerouted from this organization's primary source. "Children in need". This issue alone is enough to make any person desiring to give to charity, equal suspicion as in donating to any politician.
Agree with this letter.
But it can't happen.
You're talking about a casino owner.
They don't care about that. Those people won't come into his casino and lose. Like he wants them to. It simply don't make him money. So, he's not interested.
Trying to ask a casino owner to have a heart is pretty much the same as asking a mass murderer to stop. Can't happen.
Public trust relies on transparency and sound decision making. Charitable organizations are subject to public view, and for the most part, do a fine job with what they receive. The public is assured that discrimination and bias in the distribution of funds and goods is subjected to the checks and balances embedded within charitable organizations.
IF our country eliminated the way politicians campaign (by raising funds themselves) by the public/taxpayer provides a finite amount to each candidate, the political playing field would be vastly different than it is today. Citizens would have MORE choice in electing officials, and our government would be then, truly representative. The expanse of monies that are showered unto one campaigning person, could be put into the charitable system to assist the many in need.
I support what commenters Bradley Chapline and CarmineD stated thus far.
Blessings and Peace,
Star
Blessings and peace, my behind. Just another guy who wants to abrogate the rights we, as Americans, have enjoyed for more than 200 years. The leftists couch their words in soothing rhetoric but, given the opportunity, they will put you & me in our place and that place is in gulags and concentration camps where they can "readjust" our way of thinking as Stalin, Mao & Hitler did. The loons on the left are very dangerous to our rights, liberties and freedoms. Beware of Trojan Horses, folks!
lvfactless, blah, blah, blah...beware of factless Jerry who has now equated those he is irrational about with some of the worst figures in history. He is neuronally challenged.
Meanwhile, the sentiment of the writer is nice but elsewhere in The Sun there is an article describing how a family's pastor embezzled that same family out of their life savings of $250,000 causing them to end up on the street. People like factless would leave the vulnerable to the tender mercies of religious mythologies like this so "those people" can't take "my HARD earned money". In other words...let someone else care because conservatives don't.
I applaud the letter writer and ask her to appeal to Pres Obama to give up part of the 125 million he has raised, say 30%, the same as the tax rate he wants on millionaires, and maybe Mitt will follow with the 25 million he has raised.
The problem is you do not know where the money will go, none may ever show up in your soup kitchen. To be sure the casinos donate huge amounts of food and money to local charity, they are more likely to help then a president or candidate.. but your challenge is interesting if it was to include everyone.
I do help the poor.....I pay taxes.
Thomas, On a percentage basis how much of what you pay actually goes to the poor?
Hey Mark, I can't speak for Thomas but almost 50% of my property taxes go to the poor people down at CCSD. Poor leaders, poor managers, poor representatives, poor accounting, poor bookkeeping, poor administrators and just overall poor performance with poor accountability from a worse than poor school board. How can the teachers teach if every echelon above them is POOR in quality.
I don't think that the "poor" referred to by Bob_Realist are those the letter writer had in mind, but I have to agree with him.
There really does need to be a solid debate over the proper source of charity, should it be private contributions or should it come from government programs?
boftx,
There is plenty of fraud among private charities:
