Marriage definition pulled from Clark County GOP platform

Tue, Apr 1, 2014 (1:49 p.m.)

The Clark County Republican Party has removed a definition of marriage and statements opposing abortion from its official party platform.

The changes came after debate and a vote Saturday at the group's central committee meeting in Las Vegas.

The previous platform statement was adopted in 2012 and defined marriage as between a man and a woman. It also specified the party stood against abortion.

Political director Nick Phillips says the group's previous stance conflicted with its overall belief in personal liberty and small government.

Phillips says the changes come amid overall shifts in public opinion on gay marriage, and changes in leadership at the county party.

The platform now includes seven tenets outlining the Republican stance on jobs, public education, health care, immigration reform, taxation, fiscal responsibility and personal rights.
